My very first shot at backing a bow with rawhide. I was dealing with red oak deflexed recurve when I discovered a great deal of drying fractures on a back of the bow. They looked bad and were deep so I chose to back it. I was utilizing cow rawhide. Although it wound up succesfully I would alter a couple of things at the same time.
Next time I will be backing a bow with cow rawhide I will need to thin it prior to and cover it after using. I could not do this becouse the conceal was to stiff. Possibly utilizing various sort of glue would be an excellent concept.
The bow wound up being 56″ ntn drawing 35lbs at 25″.
Making my bows I find out all the time. It was a valuable lesson for me.
All the very best people!
