Osage orange identification, harvesting, and cutting for bow staves

June 16, 2021

Osage Orange is among the very best tree types we have for constructing selfbows. This video covers how to determine osage orange, what to try to find in regards to quality, how to determine an excellent bow stave, and how to cut bow staves securely. Collecting osage can be an obstacle due to the twisted tops and thick growing conditions.

I’m participating in the Oklahoma Selfbow Jamboree, OJAM, and the hosts were kind adequate to let us gather some bow wood on their residential or commercial property.

Among the most challenging features of collecting osage bow staves is getting the trees to drop when cut. Due to the thick growing conditions, the tops typically get contended one another making it challenging to securely get the go to the ground. Osage has thorns, furrowed bark and typically grows in association with elm and locust in bottom land forests along creeks. These staves were gathered in spring when there were no fruits so other functions are utilized in recognition. Harvest matters little in my viewpoint.

In future videos we’ll divide bow staves and follow a couple of bow structure newbies through the procedure at the OJAM in main Oklahoma.

Making your own conventional archery devices, and even your own self bow or longbow is a fantastic method to get more included with archery and bow searching, enhance your self dependence, bushcraft, and survival abilities.
