Bow searching elk with a standard wood self bow on Idaho’s public lands. This is a Do It Yourself elk bow hunt. Clay Hayes constructs wood bows and hunts nearly solely with the bows he makes. This is an osage orange all wood recurve self bow. Although Clay routinely practices long variety shooting with his bows, he restricts himself to shots under 35 lawns while searching. The majority of his shots are much more detailed, in the 10-15 lawn variety. On day 6 of this year’s elk hunt, Clay discovers himself within 35 lawns of a cow elk with the light fading. Will he take the shot, or pass in hopes of a much better opportunity later on in the hunt?
